PCFTTC has researched suicide and homicide as co-occurring challenges, based on the peer reviewed literature. A systemic trauma informed perspective is necessary for seeing, understanding, and responding to life threatening behaviors, violence, and homicide behaviors with efficacy as a clinician. Although a trauma informed systemic perspective advises the clinician’s understanding of the client and family member’s violence and homicidal behaviors it does not excuse it.  Additionally, PCFFTC believes that a clinician’s, clients, and the family members’ social ecology, intersectionality, historical geographic location, and current geographic location inform the experiences of acts of community violence, including, but not limited to, mass shootings, hate crimes, intimate partner homicide, interfamilial violence, and gun violence. Therefore, it is imperative systemic family therapy tools of assessment be used to join contextually, structurally, and at a level of meaning to promote second order change in the therapeutic process.
